He has also killed off the imposter daughter to remove her as a potential witness but the police have no reason to connect the two cases as far as we're aware.
So Harlan Dexter has by the end of the movie successfully had his real daughter killed off and the police have closed the case as a kidnapping gone wrong. My husband thinks maybe they're being meta and purposefully created the plot hole but I'm not so sure. I immediately re-watched parts of the movie afterwards to see if I had missed some crucial plot twist but I couldn't find anything to explain the whole climactic third act. Okay, now I have only just watched this film for the first time today but can't stop thinking that the whole of the last part of the film makes no sense.
